CNN declared President Obama nominated a new Supreme Court Justice on March 16, 2016. The president’s nominee is Merrick B. Garland and, if confirmed, he would be the nation’s 113th Supreme Court Justice to replace the late Antonin Scalia. Garland was introduced to other federal officials this morning in the Rose Garden. Obama describes his nominee for the Supreme Court as, “exceptionally qualified to serve on the higher Court.”
President Obama claims Garland has one of the sharpest minds, integrity, modesty, even-handedness, as well as excellence. Obama also states that Garland is well respected by both political parties in Washington D.C. The president also added how the nominee would bring those same strong characteristics to the Supreme Court.
Obama emphasized that he did not want to “divide politics.” He also stated he did not want to contradict a political process with an outcome that would last for years to come. Obama asked the Republicans for a “fair hearing.” The president then stated that if the Senate did not comply with his nomination and confirm Garland then, when Hillary Clinton becomes president they will not have such a middle-ground offer.
However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell declared that the Senate would not take action. They have refused to consider any nominee President Obama suggests.
